In a game defined by grit, physicality, and a relentless defensive squeeze, BC Prievidza took the first step in their playoff journey with an 85-71 victory over BC Komárno. With the win, Prievidza takes a 1-0 lead in the TIPOS SBL quarterfinal series, fueled by a balanced scoring attack and a defensive masterclass that lived up to the "playoff intensity" billing.
The Story of the Game
From the opening tip, it was clear this would not be a game for the faint of heart. The two teams combined for 42 fouls, mirroring their regular-season battles and turning the court into a battleground.
Prievidza held a narrow 46-39 lead at the half that could have been more comfortable with better focus. But it was the third quarter where the home team truly flexed its muscles. Utilizing a "suffocation" style of defense and forcing Komárno into contested high-difficulty shots while limiting second chances, Prievidza held the visitors to just 16 points in the frame while dropping 25 of their own to build a double-digit cushion they would never relinquish.
"Our goal was to tire them out with our defense, and we succeeded," said Prievidza head coach Gareth Murray. "We hit some big shots, but the decisive factor was the work on the defensive end."

Top Performers
Davontrey Thomas: Thomas was the consistent engine for the Prievidza offense, pouring in a game-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting. He was equally effective on the other end, recording 4 steals and a block showcasing his improved explosiveness to lead the defensive charge, as well.
James Bishop IV: Providing a massive spark off the bench, Bishop IV finished with 21 points in only 18 minutes of play. He was lethal from deep, connecting on three triples, two of them from logo territory, and together with Noah Reynolds (16 points) providing the scoring gravity needed to pull the Komárno defense apart.
Joe Toussaint: While he “only” scored 10 points, Toussaint was the defensive MVP of the night. He disrupted passing lanes all evening and harassed Komárno ballhandlers Carrington Wiggins (3-of-12 field goals, 5 turnovers) and Martin Koller (0 points, 3 turnovers, 5 fouls), racking up a game-high 5 steals and adding 4 assists, personifying the "constant pressure" philosophy Coach Murray emphasized. It therefore does not come as a surprise that the home team was +16 with “Captain Joe” on the court.

Defensive Lockdown
The story of the night was Prievidza’s ability to turn defense into offense. In particular after the halftime break, the home side forced crucial turnovers and dominated the transition game, recording 13 total steals. The relentless ball pressure eventually wore down the Komárno shooters, who struggled to find rhythm against Prievidza's aggressive closeouts.
The physicality was evident in the free-throw disparity, as well; Prievidza’s aggressive drives earned them 30 trips to the charity stripe compared to just 11 for Komárno.
Key Stat of the Night
+9: Prievidza outscored Komárno by nine points in the third quarter alone, effectively ending the visitors' hopes of a comeback and allowing the 1,867 fans in Športová hala to celebrate early.
Up Next
The series shifts to Komárno for Game 2 on Wednesday, April 15 before returning to Prievidza next Saturday.
